Santrauka

Vilniaus universitetas pergyveno labai sudėtingą istoriją, kurios metu keitėsi jo struktūra, studijų pobūdis, dėstoma kalba, politinė priklausomybė. Šios aukštosios mokyklos statuso kelias iki XXI a. pradžios buvo sudėtingas: nuo Vilniaus Jėzaus draugijos akademijos, Vilniaus imperatoriškojo universiteto, Vilniaus Stepono Batoro universiteto, Vilniaus valstybinio universiteto iki Vilniaus universiteto. Geografijos turinio ir idėjų sampratos, taikomų tyrimų metodų, sąveikos su kitais mokslais kaita lėmė, kad Universiteto gyvavimo metu susiformavo penki geografijos Universitete raidos etapai:

1. Ankstyvasis aprašomasis-grafinis.

2. Ankstyvasis teorinis.

3. Topografijos ir geografijos plėtros.

4. Klasikinės geografijos.

5. Specializacinis.

V. Revienska-Pavelkova 1936 m. apgynė daktaro, o 1939 m. – habilitacinį darbą; J. J. Tochtermanas 1937 m. apgynė daktaro disertaciją; A. Melezinas apgynė daktaro disertaciją po karo, t. y. 1946 m., Lenkijoje.Vilniaus Stepono Batoro universitete 1919–1939 m. susiformavo trys geografinių tyrimų kryptys: pirmoji kryptis – etnografiniai ir etnolingvistiniai tyrimai; antroji – socialinės ir politinės geografijos tyrimai; trečioji – geomorfologiniai, meteorologiniai, urbanistiniai ir ūkio geografiniai tyrimai.

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Vilniaus universitetas, etnografija, geomorfologija, meteorologija, socialinė, politinė, ūkio ir urbanistinė geografija.

Summary

Vilnius University has gone through a very complex history, during which its structure, nature of studies, language of instruction, and political affiliation changed. The path of this higher education institution’s status until the beginning of the 21st century was complicated: from the Vilnius Academy of the Society of Jesus, the Main School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnius Imperial University, Vilnius Stephen Báthory University, Vilnius State University to Vilnius University. Changes in the content and concept of ideas in geography, applied research methods, and interaction with other sciences led to the formation of five such stages during the university’s existence:

1. Early descriptive-graphic.

2. Early theoretical.

3. Development of topography and geography.

4. Classical geography.

5. Specialized.

The publication was prepared using archival documents stored in the Lithuanian State Archives, Vilnius University Archives, old publications in the Cartography and Geoinformatics and Geography and Lands Management Departments of the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences of Vilnius University, archival documents in the library funds of the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń, and documents collected by the private Polakiewicz family. In 1919, when Vilnius Stephen Báthory University was established, 6 faculties were established: Law and Social Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences (with the College of Agriculture), Medicine (which included the College of Pharmacy), Arts, and Theology. In 1937, the College of Agriculture, which operated within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, was reorganized into a separate Faculty of Agriculture.Over the twenty years of the university’s operation, a total of 53 167 students studied in all faculties. It is not known exactly how many of them graduated from the university and received higher education diplomas.

In the years 1919–1939, students of many nationalities studied at Stephen Báthory University, which is largely related to the national composition of the then Eastern Lithuania population. In the 1928–1929 academic year, out of 3 177 students at Stephen Báthory University, 2 106 were Poles (66 %), 864 Jews (27 %), 60 Russians (2 %), 57 Belarusians (2 %), 42 Lithuanians (1 %) and 4 Germans (0,1 %). At Vilnius Stephen Báthory University, geographical research was carried out in several faculties. Ethnographic and ethnolinguistic research was carried out at the Faculty of Humanities, socio-geographic and political geographical research at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, and physical geography research at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In 1924, the Department of Ethnology was established at the Faculty of Humanities, and the East European Research Institute operated at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences from 1930. Scientists of the East European Institute published the periodical scientific journals “Annals of the Vilnius East European Research Institute” and “Balticoslavica”, which were highly ranked in the Middle Europe. The main and most important geographical research was carried out at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The initiators of those researches were the Departments of Geophysics and Meteorology and Physical Geography.

The Department of Geophysics and Meteorology, headed by Kazimierz Jantzen, which was a division of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, carried out solutions to practical problems. Its task was to operate and maintain meteorological measurement stations at Vilnius University and in Trakai. The head of the department, Kazimierz Jantzen, gave lectures on geodesy and cartography and, together with other employees of the department, edited and published the publication “Bulletin de l’Observatoire Astronomique de Wilno”. By 1939, 14 issues had been published. The Department of Physical Geography was headed by Professor Mieczysław Limanowski from 1926, who expanded the research of the geographical environment (geomorphology, anthropogeography), formed a school of relevant research. His students and followers were the habilitated doctor Wanda Rewieńska-Pawełkowa, Jan Jerzy Tochterman, Abraham Melezin. Wanda Rewieńska defended her doctoral thesis in 1936, and her habilitation thesis in 1939; Jan Jerzy Tochterman defended her doctoral thesis in 1937; Abraham Melezin defended his doctoral thesis after the war in Poland in 1946. In Vilnius Stephen Báthory University, three directions of geographical research were formed in 1919–1939. The first direction was ethnographic and ethnolinguistic research; the second was socio-political geography research; the third was geomorphological, meteorological, urban and economic geographical research.

Keywords: Vilnius University, ethnography, geomorphology, meteorology, social, political, economic and urban geography.
