Summary
The article aims to reveal the importance of the Lithuanian museums of nature as an educational environment and the opportunities for teaching biogeography according to the general education school curriculum in such museums. The choice of Biogeography as the research subject was determined by its unique nature as well as by the need for a non-traditional educational environment. A scientific research was carried out in order to evaluate the internet websites of 32 Lithuanian museums of nature according to the following criteria: the presentation of information on the internet, the characteristics of exhibitions, and the explicitness of the presentation of educational activities. The research showed that the Lithuanian Museums Database contains 32 official museums of nature, thus an assumption was made that opportunities for teaching biogeography in museums exist. The analysis revealed that the information about the museums presented on the internet is superficial and uninformative. More than two thirds of the museums do not even have their own websites and present their general information on other organisations’ websites. Only 6 museums list their specific educational activities or give detailed descriptions of their exhibits. Therefore, it may be assumed that the largest and most popular museums explicitly determine and realise the opportunities for learning biogeography through their educational activities.
Keywords: biogeography, educational environment, museum.
